We had heard so much about Winton before leaving on our Outback Tour due to being the Dinosaur capital of Australia.
We stayed at the Matilda County Tourist Park and were lucky enough to get a drive through powered site. The park has a swimming pool & free live entertainment in the form of a Bush poet in the Bango Barn. More importantly it is the closest park to the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum.
Winton is most renowned for their Dinosaurs and one of the main reasons we visited the town. Coop has a love of dinosaurs and what a way to get all up close and personal. We visited the Australia Age of Dinosaurs Museum which is home to the largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils in the world. The Museum is split between three facilities, the Fossil Preparation Laboratory, Collection Room and Dinosaur Canyon. Coop was so animated and excited at this museum wanting to see everything in 3 mins!!
This museum is open seven days a week in winter (1 April to 31 October) from 8.30-5pm. Tours depart on the hour: 9am, 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm and 2pm* and run for 3 hours and both our kids enjoyed every second. Included in your entry price are activities for the kids to complete (& adults!) along the tours. The kids thoroughly enjoy their visit to the Age of Dinosaurs and seeing as there are more attractions being built in the coming years, we are sure to be back for another visit.
